Recent research by the CRC for Greenhouse Accounting and the NSW Department of Primary Industries is showing that wood buried in anaerobic conditions, such as those found in landfills, deteriorates very slowly or stop degrading all together. Thus the carbon that was absorbed into the wood as the tree was growing is stored permanently under these conditions.
