Biomass energy is a form of heat or electricity produced by combustion of biomass fuels which includes timber and wood. Energy produced from combustion of renewable timber is considered by the Australian Department of Climate Change to emit over 50 times less greenhouse emissions than combustion of black coal and over 30 times less than natural gas when used in industrial facilities. To heat residential homes, using waste timber as firewood generates over 16 times less greenhouse emissions than using electricity sourced from coal and over 3 times less than natural gas.[1]
